Who Am I? // A Living Sacrifice
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship. ~Romans 12:1
A living sacrifice, is that not a contradiction? When we think of sacrifices, we don't normally think of things that are alive. And yet the Bible tells us that Christ-followers are to give themselves to God as a living sacrifice. How does it work?
Websters defines sacrifice as "the act of offering something precious to God." In this case the precious thing is us...our life. It is part of human nature to look out for humber one, especially before meeting Christ. God now calls us to cultivate a sacrificial spirit that yields to His will, not our own. A life that is completely submitted to God's will is a life that's truly sacrificial.
The other half of that fateful phrase is "living." The significance of here is that when something is alive, it's usually active. Applying this to our lives, we see that although we have a sacrificial spirit, it does not mean we're to be laid back in our activity. Instead, it means we're to be about the things that God has for us to do. This includes but is not limited to engaging, serving and loving others.
